Dodder Greenway Development

The Dodder Greenway will deliver 7.5km of walking and cycling facilities within Dublin City, from the River Liffey to Orwell Park where it will join up with the existing greenway from Rathfarnham to Tallaght.

This will:

  • Provide quality, protected cycling facilities for all ages and abilities

  • Facilitate a more active lifestyle with multiple benefits for wellbeing

  • Reduce transport emissions in line with the Climate Action Plan

  • Protect the wildlife, heritage and habitats along the river.

I recently held a public meeting on the greenway where I outlined my own views on the route from Donnybrook to Milltown. It is my belief that Option 1, outlined in purple on the map here, would be the best option for everyone. I support changing Beaver Row to one way to facilitate this and keeping the cycling route on the south side of the river as much as possible.

This would include a small section of the Milltown Golf Club practice green to avoid a steep on-road section on Milltown Road. This may require a compulsory purchase order but it will be better if a ‘taking in charge’ agreement could be reached to allow us trail the better route option.

Latest Developments

There has been a lot of progress by Dublin City Council on the Greenway:

  • The Donnybrook to Clonskeagh Section of the Dodder Greenway is currently open for public consultation.  I welcome the proposed changes. Making Beaver Row one way for northbound traffic allows for 4m secure walking and cycling track along the Dodder. This is a great step forward in completing this much needed greenway from the mountains to the sea.

You can view the full scheme share your views here until the 8th December 2023: https://www.dublincity.ie/residential/transportation/active-travel/projects/dodder-greenway-project/dodder-greenway-donnybrook-road-clonskeagh-road

  • The publication for Beatty’s Avenue to Herbert Park and Fitzwilliam Quay to Londonbridge interim schemes recently published for public consultation has now closed.

  • Milltown to Donnybrook section design is due to be published shortly.
